Many students who graduate from school in the summer are faced with the question of what to do after the summer vacation. While most school leavers take the traditional route and embark on vocational training or studies straight after leaving school, there are some young people who get involved in social, ecological or cultural projects as part of a Voluntary Social Year (FSJ).
This year, for the first time, there is the opportunity to complete an FSJ in the field of digital media, which is offered by the Baden-Württemberg State Media Center together with the Ludwigsburg District Media Center and other regional media centers. During their 12-month voluntary service, the FSJ volunteers will work on a wide range of media education, active media work and youth media protection projects. The offer is aimed at school leavers aged 16 to 26.
Interesting tasks await the volunteers
The FSJ volunteers can develop their personal and digital skills through their voluntary social commitment and also gain insights into pedagogical professional fields. The Baden-Württemberg State Media Center has developed an overall concept for this purpose, which is implemented by the participating media centers. In addition to educational seminars, it includes close involvement of the volunteers in the media education work of the media centers. The FSJ volunteers acquire a wide range of digital skills in areas such as makerspaces, podcasts, coding, robotics, learning with extended reality (XR) and game-based learning.
Volunteers are also involved in media education projects at schools and extracurricular educational institutions, where they can pass on their expertise and develop their social skills. Media educators, teachers and social workers can experience them live at work and gain important practical experience in career guidance.
The district media center is looking forward to welcoming the young people
Thomas Panke, Head of the Ludwigsburg District Media Center, and his team are eagerly awaiting the applications and interviews with the young people. "The FSJ digital
offers young people an outstanding opportunity to gain a wide range of impressions in the field of digital media through their social commitment. Through active media work with children and young people, they also get to know pedagogical professional fields and thus receive important impulses for professional orientation," says Panke. "At the same time, we look forward to the ideas and impulses that the young volunteers can contribute to our work."
For the duration of the FSJ, the FSJ volunteer receives a comprehensive MediaCase for experimenting and implementing independent projects. In addition to a work laptop and tablet, it contains other materials that can be used, for example, to create podcasts, develop drone courses and build and program robots. During the FSJ, volunteers receive pocket money, a free public transport ticket and are also covered by health insurance.
