The sun is most beautiful in the shade

The Regenbogen Protestant kindergarten in Benningen is the second facility in the district to apply for the SunPass project of the Baden-Württemberg Cancer Association and has impressed with its sustainable concept.

A group of young children is gathered in a playground, holding colorful ribbons tied to a central point. Some adults assist them, guiding the activity. The setting features a large tree and a building in the background, with a vibrant atmosphere of play and cooperation.

As a reward, the health department team recently presented Dorothee Gabler, pastor of the Protestant parish, and Luciana Schilling, director, with a large parasol for the outdoor area. The certificate from the Cancer Association for successful participation in the SunPass project was included with the parasol.

The children performed a sun dance, during which the sun even shone through the clouds. "If we are not under a parasol or tree, we always have our own shade with us with a sun hat and the sun is most beautiful in the shade," explained Dr. Uschi Traub, Head of Health Promotion at the Health Department. Sunburn in children can be considered negligent bodily harm, as sunburn and frequent exposure to the sun, especially under the age of 15 to 20, significantly increase the risk of skin cancer.

The kindergarten has been working intensively on the topic of sun protection in recent weeks. The facility has a large outdoor area - so sun protection is particularly important. Luciana Schilling says: "We can make a contribution to skin cancer prevention with sun cream, rainbow sun hats, sunglasses, an information CD for parents and other things." Six-year-old Ilias presented his information: "We can also get sunburnt in the mountains, when skiing and on vacation."

Pastor Gabler is proud of the award-winning kindergarten and thanked the management and teachers. "The sun is a blessing, but sun protection is very important." The municipality of Benningen is also delighted with the award. Torsten Walter, head of the municipal office, emphasized the importance of sun protection.

The Evangelische Kindergarten Pfarrgasse in Murr, which also received a sunshade for its impressive activities, also received an award.

The health department subsidizes all 20 facilities that successfully complete the "SunPass" in the district of Ludwigsburg with 100 euros upon application. In the SunPass project, registered childcare facilities receive a sun box with a handbook, sun protection recommendations, child-friendly information material (picture book, coloring page, bonus campaign) and sun protection products. The sun box supports the facility in taking practical steps towards a healthy approach to the sun. Progress is documented in an activity report.
