Over 50 different species of mosquito are native to Germany, including the common mosquito, the blackfly and the bearded mosquito. For some years now, alien species such as the Asian tiger mosquito have also been spreading in some regions. This species is under particular scrutiny as it can potentially transmit infectious agents such as the dengue or chikungunya virus.
Protective measures in everyday life
Mosquitoes are mainly guided by smell when searching for food. Sweat, breathing air and perfumed products can have an attractive effect. For protection, it is advisable to pay attention to personal hygiene, especially in summer, to shower regularly and to use unscented care products wherever possible. Fly screens should be fitted to windows and balcony doors. When outdoors, light-colored, tightly woven fabrics and especially clothing that is not tight-fitting can offer a certain degree of protection. Mosquito repellents can help to mask their own odor. Biocide vaporizers or incense coils that release insecticides can also help protect against mosquitoes. Home remedies such as citronella candles are often advertised as protection against mosquitoes. However, these have no proven effect. All these methods should only be used outdoors or in well-ventilated areas.
Special recommendations for returning travelers
People visiting a country where diseases such as dengue or chikungunya are persistent or where a current outbreak is being observed should ensure that they use mosquito repellent both during and after their trip. This recommendation applies without restriction and is independent of disease symptoms. If symptoms develop after a trip, this should be mentioned when visiting the family doctor. Mosquito protection should be maintained for two weeks after your return to avoid transmitting the virus to a mosquito.
What can help with a bite
Despite the intense itching, it is important not to scratch the bites. Scratching can allow bacteria to enter the skin and cause infections. Cooling can help to relieve swelling and itching. "A so-called hot pen or mosquito bite stick can also put an end to itching," explains Dr. Middel. Home remedies such as apple cider vinegar, onion or your own saliva can also provide some relief due to their mild antibacterial effect.
Avoid tiger mosquito breeding sites in your own environment
Female Asian tiger mosquitoes prefer to lay their eggs above the surface of the water on the walls of containers. This includes rain barrels, watering cans filled with water, bird baths, flower stands or buckets. "Lively ponds or lakes with fish, amphibians or other insect larvae, for example, are not breeding grounds for tiger mosquitoes," explains Dr. Middel. Just seven days of stagnant water is enough for new mosquitoes to develop. To prevent proliferation, watering cans should be emptied regularly, buckets should be turned upside down and rain barrels should be tightly closed or covered with mosquito nets, for example. Bti tablets can be used in water containers that cannot be completely emptied or sealed. These ensure that mosquito larvae do not develop further without harming other insect larvae or animals such as mammals, amphibians, fish or birds.
Suspected cases of tiger mosquitoes can be reported to the health department of the district administration. The specimens can either be sent in by post or sent as informative photos by email to gesundheitsschutz[at]landkreis-ludwigsburg.de. It is important that the head from the front and the hind legs are recognizable in the photos, as this is where the typical characteristics of the mosquito can be seen.
