The launch is a result of the municipal health conference 2024, at which child and adolescent obesity was one of the central topics. Under the leadership of the health department, a working group was formed with the participation of the district medical profession, thehealth insurance companies, thesports clubs and the Rotaryclub, with the aim of promoting education, networking and new prevention services in the district.
Central point of contact for those affected
The new online service serves as a central information platform for children, young people, parents and professionals. In addition to practical tips onnutrition, exercise andhealth promotion, there are helpful links to BMI calculators, rehabilitation services and regional support centers.
A core component is the provision of free, low-threshold exercise offers, which have been developed in close cooperation with the district medical association, the Rotary Club Bietigheim-Vaihingenand sports clubs such as MTV Ludwigsburg, SV Salamander KornwestheimandSchmiede am Turm e.V..
At the same time, the first free exercise courses for affected children and young people will start in May - developed as part of a broad network of medical, sporting and social stakeholders. The first courses will take place at MTV Ludwigsburg, FunSportZentrum Kornwestheimand Schmiede am Turm in Vaihingen, among others.
Background: a challenge with far-reaching consequences
Overweight and obesity are widespread in Germany, partly as a result of the prevalence of highly processed foods and a sedentary lifestyle. In 2020, one in two adults in Germany was overweight and one in five was obese. Nationwide, 15 percent of children and young people between the ages of three and 17 are overweight and as many as 6 percent are obese (2017). In the district of Ludwigsburg alone, more than 360 children are already overweight or severely overweight at pre-school age (approx. 8 percent) (data from the 2023 school enrolment examinations). Obesity in childhood and adolescence often continues into adulthood and can lead to major medical, psychological and social consequences.
