"A man is not a pension plan"

To mark International Women's Day, Ludwigsburg District Equal Opportunities Officer Cynthia Schönau and the Schiller Adult Education Center are hosting an online lecture and discussion with Helma Sick on the topic "A man is not a pension plan: Why financial independence is so important for women" on Tuesday, February 23.

A smiling older woman with curly brown hair stands against a light background. She is wearing a light-colored cardigan over a black top. Her expression is warm and friendly, conveying confidence and approachability.

Many women stand on their own two feet financially. But there are still many who rely on a "provider" and trust that their great love will last. However, this "breadwinner model" harbors a danger: after a separation, women who have given up their job for their family often lose their financial basis. In the long term, they may even face poverty in old age.

Helma Sick encourages women and men to recognize the need for financial independence and to act accordingly. She shows what politics and business, relationships in partnerships - and above all women themselves - need to change so that family and career can be better reconciled and care work can be shared fairly between women and men.

"Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world", "Frauen in Führungspositionen: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world". This is the United Nations' motto for this year's International Women's Day on March 8. Since 1911, women have been celebrating International Women's Day to draw attention to women's rights and gender equality worldwide. The day is intended to celebrate the achievements of the women's rights movement to date, draw attention to existing discrimination and inequalities and encourage people to work towards equality between men and women themselves.

However, Covid-19 in particular is teaching us that it is mainly women who are increasingly taking on the care work in the family, thus reviving old role models. They are cutting back on their careers or managing childcare and homeschooling in addition to work. Since the pandemic, it has become even clearer that there is still a lot to do when it comes to gender equality.

All interested parties are invited to the traditional series of events organized by the district's Equal Opportunities Office as part of International Women's Day on Tuesday, February 23, from 11.00 am to around 12.30 pm, for an online lecture and discussion with Helma Sick: "A man is not a pension plan: Why financial independence is so important for women."

Helma Sick has a degree in business administration and is the owner of the company "frau & geld", which she founded and has been offering independent financial advice for women since 1987. She is the author of several financial guides and has been writing regular financial columns for many years.

The event is organized by the Equal Opportunities Officer of the Ludwigsburg district with the support of the Schiller Adult Education Centre in the Ludwigsburg district. Participation is free of charge. Registration via gleichstellungsbeauftragte@landkreis-ludwigsburg.de by February 19.
