A look inside the lungs: campaign day makes health risks tangible

At the "Lung cancer and smoking" campaign day, which took place at the beginning of October at the Bietigheim-Bissingen Vocational School Center (BSZ), pupils were able to gain an impressive insight into the structure and diseases of the lungs in the walk-in lung model. The day of action marked the successful conclusion of the cancer prevention weeks organized by the district administration's health department.

In addition to the impressive, five-meter-long lung model, the students were given a wide range of information on the topic of health and prevention. Dr. Uschi Traub, Head of Health Promotion at the Department of Health, presented facts and figures on cancer in general and cancer prevention, while Cornelia Knapp, Addiction Officer at the District Office, gave information on the effects of cigarettes, vapes and shisha. The presentation by Dr. Tobias Merk, Medical Director of Pneumology at the Thoraxklinik Ludwigsburg, dealt with diseases such as lung cancer and the medical consequences of smoking. The personal experience of lung cancer sufferer Joachim Schick, who described his journey from being a long-time smoker to being diagnosed with cancer, was particularly moving.

Hands-on supporting program

The walk-in lung model was over five meters long and offered impressive insights into the inner workings and diseases of the lungs. In addition, the pupils were able to test their knowledge in hands-on activities and a quiz and obtain up-to-date information on new forms of consumption such as e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches. Over a hundred pupils from Year 8 to vocational school level took part in the day of action.
