The HPV vaccination campaign works!

The district health department's campaign for vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV) is working. The number of HPV vaccinations in the district rose by around 63% in the first quarter of 2019.

Dr. Thomas Schönauer, Head of the Health Department, presented the prizes to the winners of the raffle as part of the campaign. Marla Leher from Ernst-Sigle-Gymnasium in Kornwestheim and Robin Wiest from Maximilian-Lutz-Realschule Besigheim were delighted with their prize: tickets to Europapark.

During the campaign under the motto "HPV - Don't let the virus win!" at all secondary schools and in surgeries in the first quarter of 2019, the Ludwigsburg health department and the medical profession, with the support of the school principals, informed all pupils in year 6 and their parents. The first results on the number of HPV vaccinations are now available. The number of HPV vaccinations billed to the KVBW (Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Baden Württemberg) in the first quarter in the district of Ludwigsburg (1462) was actually significantly higher than in the comparative district of Esslingen (1041). "Compared to the same quarter last year, an increase in the numbers was to be expected, as the vaccination recommendation has also been extended to boys since the middle of last year," says Dr. Uschi Traub from the Ludwigsburg district health department. Baden-Württemberg recorded an increase of 44 percent. At 63 percent, the district of Ludwigsburg achieved a much higher increase than in other comparable districts, which the team from the health department and Dr. Thomas Kauth from the district medical association were very pleased about.

Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are considered to be the main cause of cervical cancer and its precursors. HPV can also cause other diseases such as penile or throat cancer and genital warts. This is why vaccination is important for boys and girls. All sixth-graders who had been vaccinated against HPV at least once by June 30 were able to voluntarily take part in a prize draw. To do so, they had to send a certificate stamped by their pediatrician or family doctor to the public health department.
