Landfill site search as a joint task for the region and districts

The district of Ludwigsburg and the Verband Region Stuttgart have agreed to view the search for a site for a new landfill site as a joint task. This also includes clarifying where the mineral waste for which the region is responsible will be deposited in future. In order to clarify this issue, discussions are required with all public bodies responsible for the landfilling of waste.

The search for a new landfill site is a major challenge. For this reason, the district of Ludwigsburg and its waste recycling company AVL have agreed with the Verband Region Stuttgart to approach the search as a joint task and also want to approach the other districts in the region. The emotional public debate about AVL's search for a site has shown that the professional landfilling of mineral waste is very closely linked to the specific responsibilities of the districts and the region. "It has become clear in the discussion that a search for a site must not stop at district boundaries," emphasized District Administrator Dietmar Allgaier after a joint meeting between the district, AVL and Verband Region Stuttgart. The search in the densely populated district of Ludwigsburg had shown that no sites had been found that did not entail any disadvantages. "A search across the entire association area would most likely show better results," said the district administrator.

"If we pool our strengths and our respective expertise, then we have a good chance of finding suitable locations," Dr. Jürgen Wurmthaler, Senior Director for Economy and Infrastructure at the Verband Region Stuttgart, is also convinced, adding: "We have to take the time to do this." By covering a much larger area, the search could also gain greater professional legitimacy. "The aim must be to use all the waste management expertise in the Stuttgart region and to proceed in a coordinated manner," announces Wurmthaler. The question of how to proceed with mineral waste, for which the region is responsible, should now also be dealt with jointly. In principle, waste legislation stipulates that the Verband Region Stuttgart may use existing landfill capacities of the districts. AVL has undertaken to incorporate this waste into the two active landfills in the district by the end of 2024. By next spring, the decision on whether to continue or end this commitment should be backed up with even more figures and data. "We will transparently present the quantities that have been deposited in the district of Ludwigsburg and show which types of waste from which areas of origin have been incorporated into the landfills. We can then discuss together how to proceed," said the district administrator.
