Mayor Carsten Willing, forester Steffen Frank, head of the forestry department of the district administration office, and the two forestry trainees Lia Ternes and Florian Elsässer welcomed interested citizens to the Eberdingen municipal forest in the Nussdorf district last Saturday. Willing was particularly proud of the sustainable and near-natural management of the community forest. All proceeds from the sale of firewood go directly back into the forest.
Heat and drought cause problems for forests
Forester Frank looks after the forest in Eberdingen. No more wood is harvested than grows back. For some years now, however, heat and drought have been particularly hard on the beech trees. "Climate change is particularly noticeable where the soil can store little water. Unfortunately, this also affects some locations in the local forest," explains Frank. In some places, this has changed the appearance of the forest. However, forester Frank looks to the future with confidence: "The next generation of trees for a more climate-stable forest is already in the starting blocks and the young trees now have space and light to grow."
The removal of the dying trees has the positive effect for those interested in firewood that this year mainly beech firewood was offered. All 108 firewood lots were auctioned off. The Nussdorf department of the Eberdingen fire department provided refreshments, so that not only the firewood customers, but also their families and numerous other visitors enjoyed the lunch, which was accompanied by music from the Nussdorf brass band.
Positive results from the first firewood auction of the municipality of Eberdingen this year
Forester Frank was very pleased with the first firewood auction held by the municipality of Eberdingen this year. Two more firewood auctions will take place in the municipality: on February 17 in the Hochdorf district and on March 9 in Eberdingen. Further information can be found online at www.eberdingen.de.
Further auctions are also scheduled in the rest of the district. Many firewood auctions are taking place later than usual this year. Due to the wet weather, it was often not possible to transport the wood from the forest stand to the road in time. Firewood customers can still buy wood at auction until March. An overview of the upcoming dates can be found on the website of the forestry department: landkreis-ludwigsburg.de/brennholz.
