The Forestry Department of the District Office provides information about wood as an ecological alternative fuel and the upcoming firewood sales.
While in recent years the traditional auction dates were still the means of choice for marketing firewood, this year, as with so many things, the situation is different. Depending on the forest owner, firewood is being sold at a fixed price this year, offered in online auctions, knocked down by tender or, with an appropriate hygiene concept, sold to the highest bidder at an auction. In order to provide interested parties with an overview of all upcoming firewood sales in the district, all sales can be viewed on the Ludwigsburg District Office website www.landkreis-ludwigsburg.de/de/umwelt-technik/forsten/brennholz/ along with the expected date and procedure. Head of department Dr. Michael Nill recommends: "As changes at short notice are possible at any time due to the current situation, if you are interested, always check with your local authority before the date to find out whether the sale will take place as planned."
Firewood is produced sustainably and regionally in the forests of the Ludwigsburg district in compliance with high forestry standards. Burning wood also has other advantages: Only as much carbon dioxide is emitted as was previously bound, so burning wood is climate-neutral. One cubic metre of wood has roughly the same calorific value as 280 liters of heating oil - so burning one cubic metre of wood can save our environment an additional 0.8 tons of carbon dioxide. Regional availability also means that long transportation routes are avoided. In order to take full advantage of all these benefits, the firewood must first and foremost be stored properly and long enough. The following simple principles must be observed: Softwood should dry for at least one year, hardwood for two years. The smaller the wood is split and sawn before storage, the better. It is therefore advisable to process the firewood straight away into ready-to-use pieces and then store them in an airy but covered place. Once the wood is well dried, you can enjoy the comfort, atmosphere and aesthetics of a crackling fire in the fireplace with a clear conscience.
Information on sales dimensions and chainsaw courses:
- If the purchased wood is processed in the forest, proof of a chainsaw course is required. Courses that took place after 1 January 2016 will only be recognized if it is a two-day course. Courses before the cut-off date remain valid.
- It is mandatory to wear full personal protective equipment, consisting of a helmet with face and ear protection, cut protection trousers, cut protection boots and gloves.
- Firewood is sold either in cubic meters or in solid meters.
One solid cubic meter is one cubic meter of pure wood. A cubic meter is a cubic meter of wood that has been sawn, split and stacked in one-meter pieces. Meters can be converted into cubic meters using the simple formula: cubic meters times 0.7 can be converted into solid cubic meters.
