The past few years in the Ludwigsburg district have been characterized by above-average temperatures, too little precipitation and, as a result, periods of drought. The current above-average precipitation would at best lead to a breather. According to Boden, sufficient precipitation during the vegetation period is crucial.
Disproportionate increase in road safety costs due to forest damage
As a result of the extensive forest damage, the cost of road safety along built-up areas and roads has risen disproportionately. "The Forestry Division is taking active steps here to continue to preserve the forest and make it fit for the climate. However, we as a society must all take climate protection measures to help the forest," Boden made clear.
The forest's contribution to climate protection is the sustainable use of wood, which is aimed at high-quality and long-lasting wood products with long CO2 sequestration. "Together with the municipalities in the district, the forestry department is pursuing this goal and using the naturally renewable raw material wood sustainably," said Boden.
Around 300 forest education events with around 7,000 participants
Maintenance work for climate-stable tree species and rejuvenation of forest stands with naturally renewable tree species are decisive measures for further climate adaptation of the forests in the district of Ludwigsburg. In addition to the actual work in the forest, public relations work for the forest and, above all, forest education are crucial elements for a forest of the future: as part of around 300 forest education events in 2023 with around 7,000 participants, the topics of sustainability, circular economy and the forest ecosystem were communicated in and for the forest.
Forest Day in Hardtwald with planting campaign and nine hands-on stations on April 28
At the end of his report, Boden promoted the Forest Day on Sunday, April 28 from 10 am to 5 pm. The forest day under the motto "Experience the forest, understand the forest - our forest in (climate) change" is jointly organized by the Hardtwald forestry association and the forestry department of the district administration office in the Hardtwald forest between Steinheim and the Rems-Murr district for families and anyone interested in the diverse forest ecosystem: At nine hands-on stations for children and young people, the connections and relationships of the forest biocoenosis become clear. Adults can gain a wealth of knowledge about the interrelationships between nature, people and the climate. The forestry department will provide insights into its work and the preparation of the forest for the challenges of climate change. A highlight of the day will be the joint planting campaign with District Administrator Dietmar Allgaier and representatives of the Hardtwald forestry association, where citizens can get actively involved and make their own contribution to climate protection. The Kaisersberghütte will be run by the 1st Fasnetsverein Steinheim e.V. on Forest Day.
