On June 26, 2024: Joint campaign by the health department and the Oberstenfeld outdoor pool

On the topic of "Sun protection and skin cancer", the health department of the district administration is organizing a campaign on Wednesday, 26 June 2024, from 11 am to 5 pm at the Oberes Bottwartal mineral outdoor pool, Beilsteiner Str. 100, 71720 Oberstenfeld. This campaign is aimed at all bathers, whether children, young people or adults.

The topics of sun protection and the risk of skin cancer are particularly topical on hot days and during the vacation season. That's why staff from the health department of the Ludwigsburg district office are educating bathers about responsible sun exposure and sun protection as well as skin cancer warning signs.

If the weather is bad, the campaign will probably take place two weeks later, on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. If the weather is unclear, you can call the health department on 07141 144-2520 to find out whether the campaign will take place.

In addition to personal advice, an exhibition and information material, there will be activities for the whole family - a sun cap painting activity for children, a wheel of fortune and a throwing game. There will also be a stand dedicated to the highly topical subject of heat protection. Participation in various stations entitles you to take part in the prize draw. The main prize is a voucher for the Oberstenfeld outdoor pool. The prize-giving ceremony will take place at 15:00.

Proper protection from UV radiation - incidence of skin cancer continues to rise

Climate change has a major influence on the development of skin cancer. More sunny days mean more days with higher levels of carcinogenic UV radiation, according to the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) in Salzgitter.

The incidence of skin cancer continues to rise. According to an analysis by the commercial health insurance company KKH, 31 percent more women and men across Germany were diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2022 than in 2012. The number of insured persons affected by white skin cancer increased by around 60 percent between 2012 and 2022.

Too few women and men in Baden-Württemberg go for skin cancer screening. In the past 20 years or so, the number of hospital treatments and deaths related to skin cancer has almost doubled, according to Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) 2022.

In Germany, around 370 out of every 100,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer every year. Around 320 people are diagnosed with light (or white) skin cancer. It is divided into basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. The remainder (around 50 out of every 100,000 people) are diagnosed with the particularly malignant malignant melanoma, also known as black skin cancer.
