Health department campaign for International Women's Day 2023: Thanks, respect and small tokens of appreciation for exceptional women

Dr. Uschi Traub and Katharina Klenk from the health department visited extraordinary women - women in special circumstances who often fade into the background - on the 112th International Women's Day. Among them were women from the women's shelter, who refuse to give in despite experiencing physical and psychological violence. There were also women in homeless shelters and refugee camps who still want to help others despite their difficult fates. Women in nursing homes, who do not receive visits so often, were also visited. During the visits, the team brought the women spring bouquets, heart-shaped pasta, cooking spoons with hearts, shopping cart chips with hearts or something sweet. On International Women's Day, the health department staff met women from all over the world - Afghanistan, Bulgaria, China, Germany, Ghana, Ukraine, etc.

A caregiver presents flowers to an elderly woman seated in a chair, while another staff member stands nearby. All individuals are wearing masks, and the setting appears to be a bright indoor space. The atmosphere suggests a warm, supportive interaction.

"These strong women have earned our admiration and respect. We would like to thank the women for their efforts in rebuilding Germany after the war and for their commitment to their families and others," said Traub. The motto of this year's International Women's Day was "Each for Equal". The aim is to create a world free of stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination against women and girls that is diverse, equal and inclusive.

Schagaig from Afghanistan has just got her driving license. "I wasn't allowed to learn anything with my ex-husband; I was very small then, now I'm big." L. from China wasn't brave enough at the beginning. "Now I'm out of the difficult situation and have become very strong," she says. Both women are very grateful for the support they received and have found a new family in the women's shelter. The staff at the Ludwigsburg women's shelter wish all women in the world a lot of courage and strength to fight for their rights, sufficient protection and shelter for victims of domestic violence as well as prospects for the future.

According to Hildegard, "you can grow old like a cow, you are still learning". She appeals to younger women to be more decent towards others. 88-year-old Bertha Störk says: "You have to be able to do without a lot, you can also save money." She looks forward to lots of outings together, breakfast on the terrace and visits from the kindergarten children, to whom she also reads. When asked what 100-year-old Babette Spohn has done to live to such an old age, she replies succinctly: "Worked through it!" For Ulrike Wittig from the AWO social service, we can learn a lot from others, right up to the end, if we accept everyone as they are. "Young people should take advice from older people."

Women from Ukraine want all women and children to be able to live together in a peaceful world. Lisa, a 14-year-old schoolgirl, and Christina, who studied International Economic Relations, want protection and love for all women and for them to be cared for. Kathrin Weiß, social worker at the family homeless shelter, was pleased that women from all backgrounds and with all kinds of difficulties were remembered on International Women's Day. She would like to see more days like this.
