Support group for people with forgetfulness offers time and closeness

Misplaced the key. Forgotten a name. Briefly not knowing where you are. Many people experience moments like these. If they become more frequent, they can be unsettling and frightening. But nobody has to be alone with these worries: The support group for people with forgetfulness in the Ludwigsburg district offers a personal discussion service for people who suffer from memory problems or the onset of dementia.

Without pressure or expectations

Volunteers visit those affected at home or meet them for a walk. They listen, give time and attention - without any pressure or expectations. The meetings usually take place every two weeks and last one to two hours. The location and format depend on the wishes of the participants. Before the conversations begin, care is taken to ensure that the people involved are a good match.

Why conversations are so valuable

Experts emphasize the importance of social contact, especially in the early stages of dementia. Regular conversations promote mental activity, boost self-confidence and help people to continue participating in social life.

"Many sufferers withdraw out of insecurity or shame. A trusted conversation partner can help to reduce anxiety, provide orientation and convey the feeling of being understood and accepted. Studies show that social participation makes a significant contribution to well-being and quality of life," says Heike Dierbach, Head of Social Affairs, Nursing and Care at the District Office.

What makes the service stand out

The service is characterized by four things in particular: A sympathetic ear - without judgment or unsolicited advice; time and peace and quiet - without deadline pressure or fixed guidelines; space for thoughts and feelings - to talk out worries and discover new perspectives; and appreciation and attention - to be taken seriously just as you are.

If you are interested, you don't have to make a decision straight away. Questions can be clarified and first impressions gained in a non-binding information meeting. There is no obligation. The offer is free of charge.

Relatives can also get in touch

It is often relatives, friends or neighbors who first notice that someone could use support. They are therefore also welcome to get in touch. The team will inform, advise and consider together whether the support group's offer could be suitable.
