CITY CYCLING 2023 from July 1 to 21: All 39 municipalities pedal for the climate - Special "school cycling" campaign for the first time - CITY CYCLING stars give up their cars and report on it

From July 1 to 21, citizens from the Ludwigsburg district will once again be cycling together for more climate protection and sustainable mobility. For the first time, all 39 district municipalities are taking part.

A young girl wearing a helmet smiles while riding a yellow bicycle. Next to her, a woman riding a bike with a cargo attachment smiles as well. They are in a park with trees in the background, enjoying a sunny day.

The district of Ludwigsburg, together with all 39 district municipalities, is calling on people to take part in the CITY CYCLING competition. From July 1 to 21, citizens are invited to cycle as many of their everyday and leisure routes as possible in a climate-friendly way. The bicycle kilometers are collected and credited to their own city or municipality, which competes with other municipalities in this nationwide competition. But the cyclists themselves can also win fame and great prizes.

CITY CYCLING is an international campaign of the Climate Alliance, in which several thousand municipalities in Germany alone take part. District Administrator Dietmar Allgaier: "Last year, over 10,000 cyclists took part in our district, covering a total of over two million kilometers. This shows us that many people are prepared to give up their cars more often and thus make an important contribution to climate protection. Our task now is to further expand the cycling options in our area of responsibility in order to make the switch as convenient and safe as possible."

The district has been a regular participant since 2017 and has been able to steadily increase the number of participating towns and municipalities. "This year, the time has finally come: all 39 district municipalities are taking part in the competition. A great sign for cycling," says Lisa Röthinger, who coordinates the campaign for the district.

Special school cycling campaign

For the first time in Baden-Württemberg, the additional "School Cycling" campaign is taking place: Schools can register in this special category and will also be scored separately. The state program MOVERS - Active to School, which aims to promote the self-active mobility of schoolchildren, has its own competition materials available for this purpose.

Cycling with the stars

Anyone who wants to be particularly active beyond mere participation can cycle as a CITY CYCLING star for his or her municipality. Stars undertake not to use a car during the three-week campaign period - not even in the passenger seat. They report on their experiences in blog posts and thus become multipliers for active and sustainable everyday mobility. Their commitment is rewarded with prizes and awards. If you are interested, you can get in touch directly with the local authority contact persons listed on the CITY CYCLING website.

Taking part in CITY CYCLING is very simple: anyone who lives, works, belongs to a club or attends a school in one of the participating municipalities can register online at www.stadtradeln.de/landkreis-ludwigsburg and set up a team or join an existing team. Sub-teams can also be set up - for example, different company departments or club groups can compete with each other. The kilometers cycled are recorded in an online cycling calendar or via the CITY CYCLING app.
