Kontaktstüble, café formats and open meetings: Services for mentally ill people are being resumed

The work of the social psychiatric service (SpDi) in the contact rooms and café formats will be continued. This was decided by the district council in its special meeting on budget consolidation at the end of July. As a voluntary service, these services were initially placed on a checklist and vacant positions were not filled. However, there is now certainty: the service is to be resumed.

The café formats in Vaihingen and Kornwestheim as well as the Kontaktstüble in Bietigheim and the Montagstreff in Ditzingen were affected by the temporary suspension. The Kontaktstüble in Marbach and Vaihingen were continued by cooperation partners, as was the relatives' forum in Markgröningen as a self-help group. Specifically, these offers are voluntary services provided by the Social Psychiatric Service (SpDi) of the Health Department. The compulsory task of the SpDi is to care for mentally ill people. The SpDi has always fulfilled this mandatory task with its services in the district office as well as on an outreach basis. The form of care for mentally ill people is not prescribed, which is why the services provided were voluntary. These in turn ended up on the checklist as part of the budget consolidation process.

Background: Budget consolidation process of the district completed

Over the past six months, the district has carried out a budget consolidation process in order to reduce the structural deficit in the budget and remain financially viable. On July 25, 2025, the district council adopted a total of 471 recommendations for action, which the administration had drawn up in advance and the budget commission had discussed in a total of nine meetings since September 2024. A total of 43 million euros will be consolidated, as well as 22 million euros through a one-off reallocation of funds reserved for the clinics.
