Several drivers of small delivery vans—and most recently, a motorhome driver—had disregarded the existing height restriction and caused significant damage to the structure with their vehicles, which were too tall. For traffic safety reasons, the damaged height restriction barrier must now be completely dismantled and rebuilt.
Jürgen Vogt, Chief Administrative Officer and Head of the Transportation Department at the District Office, therefore appeals to all road users: “Please observe the applicable restrictions and use the posted detours if your vehicle exceeds the height limit. This will help prevent further damage, road closures, and disruptions for all road users.”
The closure is expected to be lifted around 8:00 p.m.
The Besigheim Road Maintenance Department of the District Office is working around the clock to restore the temporary height restriction. At the same time, on the eastern side (Neusatz) in front of the temporary barrier, they are installing an additional “warning sign” that alerts drivers their vehicle is too tall before they reach the actual height restriction. Road maintenance staff are expected to complete the work later today. The Neckar Bridge is then expected to reopen to motor vehicle traffic around 8:00 p.m.
On the western side of the Neckar Bridge, coming from the B 27, a “warning sign” will also be installed shortly before the height restriction.
Background
The Neckar Bridge was reopened to vehicles weighing less than 2.8 metric tons on September 25, 2026, following extensive inspections. To protect the bridge from damage caused by larger vehicles, a height restriction was installed: Only vehicles with a maximum height of 2.30 meters are permitted to cross. The 2.30-meter height restriction ensures that only vehicles weighing less than 2.8 metric tons cross the bridge. Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 2.8 metric tons or more are generally taller than 2.30 meters. Appropriate signage indicates this restriction well before the bridge and immediately at the entrance.
