Many trains feature dynamic stripes or arrow-shaped elements. These are meant to symbolize speed and movement—a typical design element in rail transportation. The Strohgäubahn is taking a different approach. Instead of lines, dots of varying sizes define the appearance of the trains. “The design was deliberately created as a unique concept that stands out from classic railway designs and gives the Strohgäubahn an unmistakable identity,” explains Silke Dissertori of the Strohgäubahn Special-Purpose Association.
A Tribute to the History of the Railroad
The dots are far more than just a design element. They evoke the clouds of steam from the historic locomotives that marked the beginning of railway history. In this way, the design bridges the past and the present: The Strohgäubahn looks back on over 100 years of history while simultaneously presenting itself as a modern local transit option for the region.
“We wanted to create a look that is distinctive and, at the same time, tells a story. The dots evoke the plumes of steam from the first trains—they bridge the gap between the line’s tradition and its modern future,” explains Dissertori.
Colors with a Regional Connection
The color scheme was also chosen deliberately. The vibrant yellow and fresh green represent the Strohgäu—a landscape characterized by vast fields, agricultural use, and a distinctive cultural landscape.
“The vehicles thus become rolling ambassadors for the region and create a high level of brand recognition, both for passengers and for people along the route.”
More Than Just a Beautiful Design
Since December 2012, eight Regio Shuttle RS1 railcars have been in service on the Strohgäubahn. Each vehicle offers 74 seats and 80 standing spaces and can be flexibly coupled together depending on passenger volume.
However, their distinctive appearance makes them more than just a mode of transportation. The design conveys the identity of the Strohgäubahn: rooted in the region, mindful of tradition, and at the same time open to the future.
“Good design doesn’t just stand out—it also says something about a brand’s character. Our vehicles symbolize our connection to the Strohgäu region and show that modern public transit can certainly have personality,” says Dissertori.
