At the beginning of the taster day, the pupils learned that around 2,500 people work at the district administration office and that around 60trainees and dual students are learning the following professions: Administrative assistant, civil servant in the intermediate administrative service, civil servant in the higher civil service, office management clerk, surveying technician, road warden, specialist for protection and security, Bachelor of Arts "Public Management", Bachelor of Arts "Social Work" and Bachelor of Arts "Business Administration-Health Management". The presentation of the professions was followed by a varied tour of various departments.
Centimeter-precise GPS receiver helps with the treasure hunt
In the surveying department, the young people quickly realized that it is not just about yellow tripods at the side of the road, but that there is much more to it than that. In a small treasure hunt, similar to geocaching, they searched for clues using the latest surveying technology, for example a centimeter-precise GPS receiver, until they finally found the treasure.
The next stop was the health department, which is responsible for promoting and protecting the health of the population. Some of the youngsters remembered their dental check-ups from primary school, which are carried out by the health department's youth dental care service throughout the district. A more recent topic is heat protection, which is becoming increasingly important due to climate change. First of all, the different professional groups and specialist areas in the health department were introduced. The young people were able to test their knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases on an "Aids parking meter" and were thus able to learn about another important task of the health department, prevention work.
In the district media center, the young people travel back to the time of the dinosaurs with VR glasses
Finally, the pupils learned about the work of the district media center, which supports schools and other educational institutions in the district in their media education work and offers media education workshops. Many young people were wide-eyed at the sight of the exciting devices that the district media center lends out, such as iPads, BlueBots, MaKeys, GPS devices, laptops and much more. The highlight was the journey with VR glasses to the time of the dinosaurs, where they encountered a T-Rex up close.
At the end of the taster day, the young people were surprised at how diverse the areas of responsibility of the district authority are and went home with many new impressions from the world of a modern administration.
