Regionalentwicklung Neckarschleifen e.V.: Association supports 16 projects in the steep slopes

Wine trails, lavender and a bicycle wine bar - a total of 16 projects are being implemented in the steep slopes this year.

The Neckarschleifen e.V. regional development association supports small projects that serve to preserve steep slope viticulture and the wine culture landscape. 90 percent of the funding comes from state funds, which is new this year, while the remaining ten percent is financed by the eleven member municipalities. The funds are allocated in accordance with the guidelines of the regional budget for the promotion of rural areas.

Chairman of the Board: "A small yet important building block for the preservation of steep slopes"

The long wait for the funding this year resulted in a late and tight application deadline. The fact that 28 projects were nevertheless received was a pleasant surprise for those responsible. Some applications did not meet the formal or content-related criteria of the regional budget, while others could not be funded due to the ranking according to the selection criteria. For the first time this year, the advisory board was therefore in a position to decide on more projects than could be considered with the total budget of 200,000 euros.

The chairman of the association's board, Mayor Dr. Jörg Frauhammer, is delighted with the total of 16 projects that have been awarded funding this year. "The project funding is a small yet important building block for the preservation of the steep slopes," said the chairman. Wine trolleys, a bicycle wine bar and even a wine tractor will give locals and tourists an understanding of local wine made by hand. Wine trails will bring knowledge about viticulture to life and an innovative project is trying to break new ground with the use of lavender.

About the association

The association uses the regional budget funding program, an additional funding pot previously designated at federal level to strengthen rural areas. In 2024, the funding switched to state funding.

Funding is provided for small projects in the ILE municipalities that promote the Neckarschleifen region. The fields of action of the ILEK Neckarschleifen (integrated rural development concept), which was developed in the years 2015-2017, are available for this purpose. These serve as the basis

for project eligibility. The funding project must therefore support at least one of these fields of action:

  • Steep slope viticulture as cultural heritage and image carrier of the region: profiling steep slope wines
  • Developing the Neckarschleifen wine and cultural landscape as an experience area and tourist destination
  • Vineyard terraces with a new future - innovative uses and prospects for abandoned steep slopes
  • Cultural heritage as a community task - creating awareness and finding partners
