Overweight and obesity are widespread in Germany and can be attributed to a sedentary lifestyle and the consumption of highly processed foods, among other things. Nationwide, 15 percent of children and young people aged 3 to 17 are overweight and as many as six percent are obese. In the district of Ludwigsburg alone, more than 360 children of pre-school age (around eight percent) are already overweight or severely overweight (data from the 2023 school enrolment examinations). Obesity in childhood and adolescence often continues into adulthood and can have major medical, psychological and social consequences.

In 2024, the "Obesity in children and adolescents" working group was founded in Ludwigsburg, which is already making good progress in setting up free exercise and prevention programs for children and adolescents with overweight and obesity. The homepage subpage "Overweight and obesity in children and adolescents in the Ludwigsburg district" has been online since this year and contains a wealth of information and helpful tips, as well as references to various free exercise offers for children and adolescents with overweight and obesity: A balanced and varied diet can help to prevent diet-related diseases and keep the body fit and healthy at any age. For this reason, the Nutrition Center Mittlerer Neckar supports the working group "Obesity in children and adolescents" in the area of nutrition with the following free parent-child workshops:
