The camp was held for the first time in 1959. The organizing sports group is particularly interested in sporting and community values. The supervisors receive regular training and further training. The camp offers a contemporary standard with modern sanitary facilities, an extensive recreational area and numerous sports facilities. To mark its 60th anniversary in 2019, the district subsidized a new extension, which expanded the kitchen wing and dining room, with 150,000 euros. Since then, the children and young people can eat at the same time as their supervisors and are no longer exposed to capricious weather conditions.
Almost 300 children are attending the two summer camps in Untersteinbach this year, including 20 children from Vaihingen's Hungarian twin town of Köszeg and 13 children of refugees from Ukraine.
