The last census took place in 2011. The census provides reliable population figures for the municipalities, the federal states and for Germany as a whole. It also determines other data, such as age, gender or citizenship, as well as the housing situation in Germany. Such up-to-date information is extremely important as it helps to make political, economic and social decisions.
The interviewers conduct short personal interviews with the respondents. Further questions are answered via an online questionnaire. After a one-day training course, the work lasts a few weeks, during which time can largely be freely allocated. The voluntary work is remunerated with a tax-free expense allowance of around 700 euros. Prerequisites for the job are reliability and accuracy, discretion, flexibility in terms of time and mobility, a pleasant and friendly manner, good knowledge of German (other language skills are an advantage) and being of legal age.
