The reasons for the measure in Gerlingen are that a gathering of people is to be expected at the street festival and that there is a risk of imitation due to the recent increase in knife attacks - most recently at a street festival in Solingen.
At the request of the town of Gerlingen, the Ludwigsburg District Office has issued a ban on knives and weapons for the Gerlingen street festival from September 7 to 8, 2024. The ordinance prohibits the carrying of weapons and knives with a blade length of more than four centimetres on the festival grounds. In a letter, the district administration office also offers the mayors' offices in its area of responsibility the opportunity to contact the district police authority if events are taking place in their municipalities for which they consider it necessary to set up a no-knife and no-weapons zone based on their assessment of the risk situation.
