The forest-owning municipalities in the district were already able to gain experience with digital firewood sales last winter. All of the methods used worked well. This year, municipalities and firewood customers can benefit from the experience gained so that nothing stands in the way of sales.
As in previous years, Erligheim was the first municipality in the district to start selling firewood at the end of November. The last sale date is expected to be offered by Vaihingen in March 2022. As changes are possible at short notice, if you are interested, please contact the respective municipality before the date to find out whether the sale can take place as planned.
Firewood is not only a good alternative energy source due to rising heating oil prices. The most important argument for using wood as a heating material is its good climate compatibility. Although carbon dioxide is released when wood is burned, this is only as much as the tree has stored in its lifetime. Ultimately, this is also the same amount that is released into the atmosphere in the long term during the natural decomposition of the wood. Unlike fossil fuels, firewood is available regionally, eliminating long transportation routes. In addition, sustainable forestry in Germany ensures a long-term supply of wood.
Forestry is constantly evolving. For example, TheForestCleanup project was launched by the Rottenburg University of Applied Forest Sciences, which the district administration's forestry department joined very early on and transferred to various areas of local forest management. The aim is to reduce plastic and other waste in the forest. The PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) certification system has similar ambitions. Firewood customers can also make an important contribution in this context by refraining from covering piles of firewood in the forest. These and other regulations on the sale of firewood, such as proof of a chainsaw course or the necessary protective equipment when working with a chainsaw, are regulated in the firewood leaflet issued by the Forestry Division. When firewood is sold by local authorities, it is sold in units of cubic meters or solid meters. One solid cubic meter is one cubic meter of pure wood. One cubic meter is the amount of wood required to split and stack a volume of 1x1x1 meter. Meters can be converted into cubic meters using the simple formula: cubic meters times 0.7 can be converted into solid cubic meters.
Already split wood cannot be purchased from the local authorities in the district. This stove-ready wood is often offered by suppliers in bulk cubic meters. This is the amount of split wood that can be "poured" into a lattice box with a volume of one cubic meter. One bulk cubic meter corresponds to around 0.4 solid cubic meters.
