Fast Internet for all households in Ditzingen-Heimerdingen

Progress is being made: the Heimerdingen district of Ditzingen will be fully equipped with high-speed fiber optic cables in the coming months. Telekom has announced this in a letter of intent.

A group of six people stands on a balcony, smiling. They are each holding a piece of string, symbolizing a connection. The setting appears to be an official event, highlighting collaboration and unity among the individuals present.

A good connection to high-speed Internet: (from right) Mayor Michael Makurath, Viktor Kostic, Managing Director of Zweckverband Kreisbreitband, District Administrator Dr. Rainer Haas and representatives of Telekom as well as local head Fritz Hämmerle (far left).

"Fast Internet is a decisive economic factor, but it is also becoming increasingly important for the quality of life and even the value of real estate. We are now closing a veritable gap in coverage in Ditzingen-Heimerdingen - and more will follow," said District Administrator Dr. Rainer Haas at the signing of the letter of intent by the town of Ditzingen and Telekom on Tuesday (March 19).

A fiber optic connection to all households - this is still a rarity in Germany. According to a recent study, only around two percent of all households are currently equipped with such a so-called FTTH connection ("Fibre To The Home"). In the Heimerdingen district of Ditzingen, this figure is soon to reach 100 percent. Telekom and the city of Ditzingen have jointly committed to this today (Tuesday, March 19). All of the approximately 1,700 households could be equipped with high-speed Internet by mid-2020. "This brings us a good deal closer to our goal of comprehensive fibre optic coverage in the region," emphasized District Administrator Dr. Rainer Haas at the signing of the letter of intent.

For Ditzingen Mayor Michael Makurath, the planned network is "a quantum leap in digitalization" and "a locational advantage for the Ditzingen district of Heimerdingen and its residents." Pre-marketing for the fast connections will begin on 2 May. It is now up to the building owners to decide whether this course can be set for the future. Makurath emphasized that the expansion of the more than 1,700 households will be fully financed by Deutsche Telekom.

The expansion of the fiber optic network in Ditzingen is part of an overall plan negotiated by the Zweckverband Kreisbreitband Ludwigsburg as part of the Stuttgart economic region. It provides for the investment costs of around 1.6 billion euros for complete coverage of the Stuttgart region to be split. Telekom will assume responsibility for around 600 million euros. If the cities and municipalities raise a total of 500 million euros for this, Telekom would invest a further 500 million euros, according to the agreement.
