Traveling exhibition on women's suffrage at the Mathilde Planck School

To mark this year's "100 years of women's suffrage" anniversary, the traveling exhibition "Women's political awakening - the fight for women's suffrage" opened today (Wednesday, April 3) at the district's Mathilde Planck School.

Exhibition banners discussing women's voting rights in German. The text highlights historical demands for women's suffrage, featuring portraits and descriptions. The setting includes indoor greenery, creating an educational atmosphere focused on gender equality and women's rights.

In his speech, District Administrator Dr. Rainer Haas addressed the historical development of equal rights in Germany and stated: "Even 25 years after the Basic Law was amended with regard to equal rights for men and women, there is still a lot to be done." The traveling exhibition presents the historical course of the introduction of women's suffrage and the most important women's rights activists of that time. The exhibition impressively shows the strategies used by the women's rights activists and how they networked. The touring exhibition is rounded off with posters from various parties during the first women's election campaign in 1919. "The exhibition makes it clear that many courageous women fought for years for their basic right - because the right to vote is one of the fundamental democratic rights," said District Administrator Dr. Rainer Haas. The exhibition is also relevant in view of the local and European elections taking place at the end of May.

As part of the exhibition opening, cultural scientist Kerstin Hopfensitz gave a keynote speech on the topic of "100 years of women's suffrage - the end of costumes". She discussed the connections between fashion and the introduction of women's suffrage - and the many reasons why men wanted to prevent women from voting at the time. The vocational schools at Römerhügel used the exhibition in the school center as a prelude to the subsequent preparation of the topic in class. The travelling exhibition of the Women's Museum in Bonn will then be shown in the foyer of the Kreishaus from 16 to 29 April.
