During his training as a specialist in recycling and waste management at AVL, Manuel Mergl learned how modern waste disposal works and how to keep valuable resources in the material cycle. He gained an insight into the work at the landfills, shredding sites and recycling centers. "The training content is very varied and you are well prepared for all areas of the waste disposal industry after the training," says Melanie Degener, who completed the dual study program at AVL and is a trainer at AVL at the age of 27. "The trainees learn a lot about environmental protection and waste treatment technology. They are mainly given practical tasks, such as taking samples at the landfill, the associated analysis in the laboratory, repairing the equipment in the plants and monitoring and control tasks."
Manuel Mergl is still employed by AVL - now with a permanent employment contract. "Training to become an environmental technologist or specialist in recycling and waste management at AVL is versatile and varied: during the training, you get a lot of insight into almost all areas of AVL. This ranges from the landfills and recycling centers to the used goods department, the service center and administration. At the same time, training as an environmental technologist is a contribution to environmental protection and, above all, training with a future," says Mergl.
Abfallverwertungsgesellschaft des Landkreises Ludwigsburg also received a certificate from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce for its exemplary training. "We are very proud to have supported such a good apprentice in our company," said AVL Managing Director Tilman Hepperle. "The award is an incentive for us to continue offering young people first-class training."
To train as an environmental technologist (m/f/d) for recycling and waste management, you need a good secondary school leaving certificate and an interest in technical and manual tasks. New places at AVL will be offered again from September 01, 2026. If you would like to get to know AVL personally, you can do so on March 18, 2026 at the career orientation and apprenticeship fair in the Ludwigsburg music hall.
