Federal elections

on 28 September 2025

The Bundestag was dissolved by the Federal President on December 27, 2024 (BGBl. 2024 I Nr. 434), therefore the new election shall take place within sixty days of the dissolution (Article 68 and Article 39(1) of the Basic Law). By order of December 27, 2024 (BGBl. 2024 I No. 435), the Federal President has set February 23, 2025 as the election day.

In the event of the dissolution of the Bundestag, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and for Home Affairs is authorized to shorten the deadlines and dates specified in the Federal Elections Act and the Federal Electoral Regulations by statutory order (Section 52 (3) BWG). The shortened deadlines are therefore based on the Ordinance on the Shortening of Deadlines in the Federal Elections Act for the Election to the 21st German Bundestag of 27 December 2024 issued by the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Home Affairs December 2024 (BGBl. 2024 I Nr. 436).

The main dates and deadlines for the election to the 21st German Bundestag on February 23 2025 are available on the Federal Returning Officer's website.

The Basic Law (i.e. the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany) specifies the time frame in which a Bundestag election must take place (Art. 39 para. 1 Basic Law).

In an order dated 23 August 2024, the Federal President set the election day of the next Bundestag elections at 28 September 2024.

Irrespective of the election date, the elections for the Representatives' Assembly may not take place earlier than 29 months after the start of the Bundestag's election period. The elections for the candidates themselves may take place no earlier than 32 months after the start of the election period (Section 21 (3) Cl. 3 of the Federal Electoral Act).
